Attachment Quotes
A feeling of aversion or attachment toward something is your clue that there's work to be done.
Remember, you are not so miserable as you have made yourself out to be. You are God, too, and cultivating this constant awareness within you will help keep you from false attachments, from identifying yourself with your body, mind, and senses. So you must say to yourself, “Body, mind, and senses are mine, but they are not me, for I am that eternal flame which is not subject to change, death, and decay.” This awareness should always be with you.
Worry is the product of feverish imagination working under the stimulus of desires... It is a necessary resultant of attachment to the past or to the anticipated future, and it always persists in some form or other until the mind is completely detached from everything.
It is your attachment that creates hell.
Suppose we ate a delicious dessert last night, like payasam (a marvelous Indian dessert made of milk, rice, and sugar). Because it was so tasty and nice, we were very happy. But if we had been served a bland dish without any sugar or spices, we would not have found it so delicious and we would not have been happy. The jnani, however, is happy no matter how it tastes. A jnani is not concerned with the taste of food. The jnani eats something, and he is neither happy nor unhappy. That is the difference. In our case, we experience everything according to our likes and dislikes, our doership; we are attached to the senses. The jnani has the same taste buds as we do, but without attachment to the taste.
"I am the awareness that is aware that there is attachment." That's the beginning of the transformation of consciousness.
The world, like a dream full of attachments and aversions seems real until the awakening.
I send people away because attachment happens both ways.
I don't mind what happens. That is the essence of inner freedom. It is a timeless spiritual truth: release attachment to outcomes, deep inside yourself, you'll feel good no matter what.
Attachment is the state of ignorance or forgetfulness, and thus clinging to a memory of enjoyment.
If one just serves the Supreme Personality of Godhead and his devotees, his attachment to his household will diminish.
Chastity, non-injury, forgiving even the greatest enemy, truth, faith in the Lord, these are all different Vrittis. Be not afraid if you are not perfect in all of these; work, they will come. Learn to love all the things of the world, just as means but don’t get attached to them. This is the secret—the philosophy of non-attachment.
And we should forget, day by day, what we have done; this is true non-attachment. And we should do something new. To do something new, of course we must know our past, and this is alright. But we should not keep holding onto anything we have done; we should only reflect on it. And we must have some idea of what we should do in the future. But the future is the future, the past is the past; now we should work on something new.
The five yamas are: non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, brahmacharya and non-attachment. The five niyamas are: purity, contentment, study of the self, tapas (austerity) and surrender to God. The yamas and niyamas are the first two components of yoga’s eight integral components which are: yamas, niyamas, asanas, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana and samadhi. Yoga sadhana can only be performed within the protective fortress of the yamas and niyamas. Without this foundation, the seeker is condemned to endless disturbances.
When we come to nonattachment, then we can understand the marvelous mystery of the universe: how it is intense activity and at the same time intense peace, how it is work every moment and rest every moment.
To work without attachment is to work without the expectation of reward or fear of any punishment in this world or the next. Work so done is a means to the end, and God is the end.
Woman is the destroyer of man. Do not look at her, at any cost. Note: (The sun of the self, that is, sound, is referred to here as man; and the jyoti, light of the self, is referred to as woman. In other words, do not be interested in the play of jyoti, or develop attachment to the inner visions; after all, visions are secondary and are not inner Realization.)
The reflection, the verisimilitude, of life that shines in the fleshly cells from the soul source is the only cause of man's attachment to his body; obviously he would not pay solicitous homage to a clod of clay. A human being falsely identifies himself with his physical form because the life currents from the soul are breath-conveyed into the flesh with such intense power that man mistakes the effect for a cause, and idolatrously imagines the body to have life of its own.
An adept of Kriya Yoga conquers death by taking the soul beyond identification with the physical body, consciously and at will; and then returning to the consciousness of the mortal form again. By this process, he experiences the body as merely the material dwelling place of the soul. He can remain therein as long as he wants; and after that body has fulfilled its usefulness, he can quit it at will without suffering physical pain or mental pain due to attachment, and enter his omnipresent home in God.
It is only your self-identification with your mind that makes you happy or unhappy. Rebel against your slavery to your mind, see your bonds as self-created and break the chains of attachment and revulsion. Keep in mind your goal of freedom, until it dawns on you that you are already free, that freedom is not something in the distant future to be earned with painful efforts, but perennially one's own, to be used! Liberation is not an acquisition but a matter of courage, the courage to believe that you are free already and to act on it.
Marriage is more attachment. You need more devotion and discipline to have union with God when you are married.
Heart is the place of emotion, ego, and attachment. You have to rise above all the propensities of the heart. Clean it thoroughly, surrendering it to God through regular prayer and meditation, and through sincere and steadfast effort.
