Yoga Quotes

Hatha Yoga teaches us to use the body as the bow, asana as the arrow, and the soul the target.

B.K.S. Iyengar

The five yamas are: non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, brahmacharya and non-attachment. The five niyamas are: purity, contentment, study of the self, tapas (austerity) and surrender to God. The yamas and niyamas are the first two components of yoga’s eight integral components which are: yamas, niyamas, asanas, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana and samadhi. Yoga sadhana can only be performed within the protective fortress of the yamas and niyamas. Without this foundation, the seeker is condemned to endless disturbances.

Swami Kripalvananda

For the practice of yoga and meditation, there are three important requirements: a sense of morality; mind control; knowledge or intelligence.

Sanyal Mahasaya

Yoga takes you close to your true nature. Yoga with its techniques helps you to harmonize with nature. Peace is our very nature, and yoga leads you to inner peace.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

A mind free from all disturbances is Yoga.

Patanjali

Yoga is the practice of quieting the mind.

Patanjali

If you can control the rising of the mind into ripples, you will experience Yoga.

Patanjali

The wave uniting with its depth is yoga.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

The challenge of yoga is to go beyond our limits - within reason. We continually expand the frame of the mind by using the canvas of the body. It is as if you were to stretch a canvas more and create a larger surface for a painting. But we must respect the present form of our body. If you pull too much at once, we will rip the canvas. If the practice of today damages the practice of tomorrow, it is not correct practice.

B.K.S. Iyengar

An adept of Kriya Yoga conquers death by taking the soul beyond identification with the physical body, consciously and at will; and then returning to the consciousness of the mortal form again. By this process, he experiences the body as merely the material dwelling place of the soul. He can remain therein as long as he wants; and after that body has fulfilled its usefulness, he can quit it at will without suffering physical pain or mental pain due to attachment, and enter his omnipresent home in God.

Paramahamsa Yogananda

Nobody ever fails in Yoga....It is slow in the beginning and rapid in the end. When one is fully matured, realization is explosive.

Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

Whether the sadhaka wants to follow the path of jnana (knowledge), or the path of karma (action), the sadhaka must pass through the stage of action. Karma yoga is the base of all yogas. It is the first step and yoga of knowledge is the second step.

Swami Kripalvananda

Yoga is anything which reveals or reflects the wholeness that we truly are, and the world is anything that makes us feel that we are fragmented, dissected, cut into pieces and out of tune with ourselves.

Swami Krishnananda Saraswati

Yogas chitta vritti nirodhah - (Yoga is to check the mind from changing) - which is acceptable to all. That is also the goal of all. The method is chosen according to one's own fitness. The goal for all is the same. Yet different names are given to the goal only to suit the process preliminary to reaching the goal. Bhakti, Yoga, Jnana are all the same.

Ramana Maharshi

The practice of yogasana for the sake of health, to keep fit, or to maintain flexibility is the external practice of yoga. While this is a legitimate place to begin, it is not the end. Even in simple asanas, one is experiencing the three levels of quest: the external quest, which brings firmness of the body; the internal quest, which brings steadiness of intelligence; and the innermost quest, which brings benevolence of spirit.

B.K.S. Iyengar
19

It is the power of God that is working through you. Kriya Yoga teaches you to remember the soul in every activity.

Paramahamsa Hariharananda

Without love, neither jnana yoga nor karma yoga can be fruitful. Love is the soul of yoga.

Swami Kripalvananda

Kriya Yoga includes techniques that are entirely scientific, every step being based upon experimental realization. Yoga and science are inseparable, just as religion and science are necessary complements. The scientist sets the task of controlling the physical forces, whereas yogi is concerned with the mental forces. A scientist is an unconscious yogi whose mind works on external grooves. Yoga is an exact science based on immutable laws of nature.

Paramahamsa Hariharananda

Through the practice of Kriya Yoga, love flourishes.

Paramahamsa Hariharananda

Yes, flexibility of body and physical perfection for Yogasana is important. However more important is the state of your mind, Meditative mind. Your flexibility might be excellent but if your mind is not attentive, you are merely doing some physical exercise, not Yoga.

B.K.S. Iyengar

Yoga is the golden key that unlocks the door to peace, tranquility and joy.

B.K.S. Iyengar

Lord Krishna... proclaims Self-realization, true wisdom, as the highest branch of all human knowledge-the king of all sciences, the very essence of dharma ("religion")-for it alone permanently uproots the cause of man's threefold suffering and reveals to him his true nature of Bliss. Self-realization is yoga or "oneness" with truth-the direct perception or experience of truth by the all-knowing intuitive faculty of the soul.

Paramahamsa Yogananda

You attained this rare human birth. You have the desire for evolution. You have accepted the path of Yoga. Practise purity. Let all your perceptions be pure. Let all your thoughts be pure. Let all your activities be pure. Then you are close to the goal – self-realization is at hand.

Paramahamsa Prajnanananda
